Week 2 – Preview and Picks

by David Taylor

It’s week 2 of the AFL season! Last week did not disappoint, and this week has some big match-ups. Take a look:

Philadelphia Soul at Baltimore Brigade:

Both teams are coming off of season-opening wins in week 1. The Soul will be getting back DB Dwayne Hollis, who was the 2017 Defensive Back of the Year. That is just in time because Baltimore WR Joe Hills scored three touchdowns last weekend. The Brigade receiver’s previous team was Albany, where Hills lead the league in touchdowns in 2018.

Prediction: Philly wins a nail biter, 51-50.

Columbus Destroyers at Atlantic City Blackjacks

The Blackjacks lost a close game to the Soul in week 1. The new franchise showed real promise and played like a seasoned AFL team. By contrast, Columbus struggled out of the gate, amassing only 19 points in the season opener. Destroyers QB Danny Southwick struggled, throwing two interceptions and was only 10-17 passing. This prompted a change this week, as backup Grant Russell will get the nod. Atlantic City had some troubles at QB as well, as Randy Hippeard threw two pick-sixes. Hippeard more than atoned for those picks, however, as he threw five touchdown passes.

Prediction: Atlantic City wins its home opener, 38-33.

Washington Valor at Albany Empire

Week 1 was very different for these two teams. Albany’s defense dominated Columbus, only surrendering 19 points. Washington lost to Baltimore in a shootout. Valor QB Arvell Nelson lit it up in week one, throwing 8 touchdown passes. Albany was efficient on offense and opportunistic on defense, forcing three turnovers. Something’s got to give.

Prediction: The Empire strikes back, avenging last season’s playoff loss to the Valor.
Empire 47, Valor 35.
